Reliance Jio added over 15,000 subscribers in Kolkata during March 2023, according to the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). This led to Jio crossing its milestone of 10 million subscribers in the city. Meanwhile, Bharti Airtel added 8,654 subscribers in March and Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi) lost 34,693 during the same month.
According to a report published by Macquarie Research on May 2023, Jio has capitalised on the diminishing market share of Vi since 2018, acquiring the majority of Vi’s lost share to improve its position. Airtel has faced such a big difference from this shift. Jio has a market share of 43 per cent in the Kolkata metro circle which currently comprises of 24 million subscribers. Airtel and Vi hold around 24 per cent and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited lags behind with 9 per cent. Based on the data by Visitor location register (VLR), a crucial measure of active subscribers reinforces Jio’s lead with 98.5 per cent against Airtel’s 96.5 per cent and Vi’s 88.5 per cent.
