As per the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi) lost a whopping 3.76 million and 1.97 million, while Bharti Airtel gained 1.92 million subscribers month-on-month during October 2024. Meanwhile, the user base of Jio and Vi shrank to 460.01 million and 210.47 million respectively. In addition, Airtel gained a user base of 385.41 million.

Separately, Jio further consolidated its market leadership in the wireline space in October 2024. TRAI data showed that Jio added 0.68 million wireline users, boosting its landline user base to 15.68 million. Meanwhile, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) lost 0.035 million wireline users. In addition, Airtel added 0.22 million users, boosting its wireline user base to around 9.54 million.

Further, the month of October 2024 witnessed Jio narrowing its customer market share to 39.99 per cent (from 40.20 per cent in September 2024). Similarly, Vi’s narrowed further to 18.30 per cent as against 18.41 per cent the previous month while Airtel’s market share widened at 33.50 per cent from 33.24 in the previous month.

Besides, TRAI data showed that Jio, and Vi lost customers in rural India. Jio lost 1.58 million in these geographies and Vi lost around 1.55 million. Meanwhile, Airtel gained 2.20 million in these geographies. The data released by the regulator also showed that overall wireless tele-density decreased marginally to 84.46 per cent in October 2024 from 82.07 per cent in September 2024.

During October 2024, 13.45 million users submitted requests for mobile number portability (MNP), increasing the cumulative requests to 1052.56 million by end-October 2024 from 1039.11 million by end-September 2024. The wireline user base increased from 36.93 million at the end of September 2024 to 37.79 million at the end of October 2024, registering a net increase of 0.85 million.
