Japan’s second largest mobile operator by subscribers, KDDI Corporation, has selected Airvana to provide it with 3G/CDMA femtocells and a femtocell service manager (FSM) platform, as part of a comprehensive solution being delivered by Hitachi. Under the joint deal, Airvana will deliver its HubBub CDMA femtocell, which it claims will support both CDMA2000 1xRTT and 1xEVDO services; the FSM for massive-scale device management and automated network planning; and the FNG femtocell network gateway. Hitachi will provide core network equipment to connect the HubBub femtocell system into KDDI’s core network. The operator intends to commence trials of the combined HitachiAirvana femtocell solution in March 2010.
