Japan’s NTT DOCOMO is contemplating exiting from U Mobile, its JV in Malaysia, which offers 3G services, over differences of opinion with other shareholders. DOCOMO is likely to sell its 16.5 per cent stake in the JV for $100 million, which is the same amount at which it had entered the JV. DOCOMO and Korea’s KT Freetel each acquired 16.5 per cent stake in U Mobile in 2008. However, U Mobile has not been able to achieve much success and currently has only 1 per cent share in the Malaysian wireless services market. KT Freetel is also planning to exit the JV.
