Japan’s four main cellular operators ?? NTT DoCoMo, KDDI, Softbank Mobile and eMobile ?? are together planning to invest up to $10 billion into 3.9G mobile services in the near future (3.9G performance is roughly comparable with fibre optic networks).
From 2010, a number of domestic carriers in Japan intend to utilise their existing 3G infrastructure to keep 3.9G rollout costs to a minimum. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication is likely to issue 3.9G licences by mid-2009.
