J.S. Sarma has taken over as chairman of TRAI, succeeding Nripendra Misra. TRAI member A.K. Sawhney had been acting as the chairman since Misra retired on March 22, 2009.
Before joining TRAI, Sarma was member of the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT). Sarma, a former telecom secretary, has served in various ministries including the Ministry of Rural Development and the Department of Personnel and Training.
