J.S. Deepak has joined Bharti Airtel as group director for policy and international strategy. He will report to Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman, Bharti Enterprises. 

Deepak worked as secretary, Department of Telecommunications (DoT) from 2016 to 2017, where he was responsible for the formulation of telecom policy, regulations and reforms in the sector. He led the initiative for the rollout of the national optical fibre network, Bharatnet, to provide connectivity to 250,000 gram panchayats in the country. He was also responsible for spectrum auctions for improving telecom services. Deepak also served as joint secretary (telecommunications), DoT, from April 2008 to July 2010 when he designed and conducted the first 3G/4G spectrum auctions.

Previously, he worked as additional sectretary, Department of Commerce, where he looked after the work related to the formulation and implementation of India’s trade policy. He was also India’s chief negotiator at the World Trade Organisation (WTO), for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement and the India-EU free trade agreement. Deepak is an Indian administrative services (IAS) officer with an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad.
