The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is establishing an International Advisory Body for Submarine Cable Resilience. These cables, which transport more than 99 per cent of global data, are crucial for the digital economy, facilitating communication, finance, and cloud services. However, they face increasing risks from natural disasters and accidents.

The advisory body’s main goals include offering strategic guidance, advocating best practices, and encouraging international collaboration on policies, technological advancements, and investment strategies to protect these vital systems.

The inaugural virtual meeting of the group is set for 1st November 2024, where members will outline their agenda and expected outcomes. Additionally, they will play a role in the upcoming submarine cable resilience summit scheduled for early 2025. This initiative by the ITU highlights the pressing need to safeguard submarine cables, which are essential for global connectivity and economic stability.
