Investigative agencies scrutinising the 2G spectrum issue have received replies from about five countries to which letters rogatory (LR) were issued in late 2010, according to news reports. These LR were issued, requesting information about the likely sources of funding tapped by certain operators who were awarded spectrum.
The Supreme Court has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to submit status reports by February 10, when the 2G spectrum case will come up for hearing.
In late 2010, the ED had sent out LRs to 10 countries including Russia, the UAE, Isle of Man, Cyprus, Mauritius, Norway, Singapore and Libya. Prior to this, the ED had already approached the foreign counterparts of operators who were allotted spectrum between September 2007 and January 2008 on a semi-formal basis.
Meanwhile, the Public Accounts committee (PAC) has asked RBI Governor D. Subbarao to provide information related to the 2G spectrum issue. It is believed that the PAC will enquire whether any bank regulations were violated while carrying out any financial transactions related to 2G spectrum allocation.
Additionally, Subbarao is expected to face questions on the issues of changes in the entry fee for telecom operators.
