In the first quarter of 2012, Cisco, Juniper, and Huawei together account for 96 per cent of core router revenue. In Q4 2011, the top five vendors in the market were Cisco, Huawei, Alcatel-Lucent, ZTE and Juniper.

The latest Infonetics Research states that Cisco has increased its share from about 31 percent to about 39 percent quarter-on-quarter basis. It has the biggest installed base of routers at both operators and enterprises.

Infonetics Research forecast that Alcatel-Lucent, though a late entrant in the core router market, has the potential to shake-up the vendor market share landscape. Service provider routers and switches are the second largest telecom market segment in 2011 with total revenue of US$ 14.5 billion following mobile RAN spending at US$ 30 plus billion.

The service provider router and switch market includes IP edge routers, IP core routers, and carrier Ethernet switches (CES). According to Infonetics Research it sequentially decreased 14 percent to US$ 3.3 billion in the first quarter of 2012.
