According to a report by Macquarie Equity Research, India’s data centre (DC) capacity is expected to double by 2027 based on facilities currently under construction and could potentially rise fivefold by 2030 if the planned pipeline receives expedited approvals.
India presently has 1.4-gigawatt (GW) of operational DC capacity, with an additional 1.4 GW under construction and nearly 5 GW in various planning stages. The report also highlighted that this growth will be supported by data localisation requirements, a favourable regulatory landscape, government incentives, and increasing cloud adoption.
Further, Google has announced a $15 billion commitment to establish an artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure hub in Andhra Pradesh. The initiative will include a GW-scale DC developed in partnership with Adani Group. The project is expected to generate approximately 5,000-6,000 direct jobs and 20,000-30,000 total employment opportunities in the state.
The AI hub in Visakhapatnam will be Google’s largest outside the US and will incorporate a clean-energy-powered DC and an extensive fibre-optic network.
