Meta is reportedly banking on India as a major driver of its $10-billion global business messaging market, with paid messaging alone already generating a billion-dollar run rate.
The region accounts for a large share of users across Meta’s platforms and showed early signs of success even before WhatsApp was monetised.
According to Meta, India, with more than 800 million internet users, remains its single largest market across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. However, only 200 million are online shoppers, and just 5 million of the country’s 63 million small businesses are online, leaving substantial room for growth.
For instance, WhatsApp transit ticketing has reached 7 million transactions per month and is projected to exceed 100 million by the end of calendar year 2025.
Additionally, Businesses in India are also adopting generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) features across Meta’s advertising suite. Many have started using WhatsApp status ads on the Updates tab, launched in June. WhatsApp voice is also gaining traction with enterprise clients, as AI-powered voicebots engage with customers in vernacular languages.
