In view of the security implications, DoT has directed Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL) not to offer BlackBerry services unless the required monitoring system is in place. This move comes after TTSL and its subsidiary Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) Limited (TTML) had sought permission for launching BlackBerry services, saying that other leading operators have been offering services without meeting the security clauses. According to DoT, however, any other operator’s non-compliance with instructions in breach of terms and conditions of the licence cannot be a valid ground for according permission to offer BlackBerry services. DoT and the Ministry of Home Affairs have been in talks with the BlackBerry licenser, Research In Motion, to put in place a system to intercept data sent using BlackBerry technology.
