In a bid to encourage the development of China’s indigenous technology standard, time division synchronous code division multiple access (TD-SCDMA), Hong Kong’s telecommunications regulator may issue two additional 3G mobile licences on it. This will be beneficial for companies such as China Mobile, which are reportedly interested in using TD-SCDMA for their 3G operations. Currently, 3G operators in Hong Kong such as Hong Kong CSL, Hutchison Telecom, SmarTone-Vodafone and Sunday Communications are offering the service using WCDMA. The government is also considering issuing a 3G licence using CDMA technology by 2008.
