IBM today announced that it will showcase its portable modular data center (PMDC) a compact, portable, fully functional and high-density capable data centre ?in-a-box? tomorrow at The Crowne Plaza, Gurgaon. The PMDC is a key member of the IBM Data Center Family and is the only family member to offer complete installation flexibility enabling the client to have a new, fully functional data center just outside their existing building or half way around the world in any remote location within 12-14 weeks. The solution is specifically designed for organizations requiring immediate additional computing capacity.

Housed within a standard ISO (International Standard Organization) shipping container, the PMDC allows organizations to avoid unnecessary costs, time and space required to build a new facility, often at short notice. The fully customizable, insulated and environmentally sealed containers can be designed, built, shipped and deployed into any environment. Its flexibility means the PMDC can act as a remote data centre, temporary data centre, mobile data centre, private or public cloud data centre environments.

Unlike similar competitive offerings, IBM?s PMDC solution supports multiple vendor technologies and offers organizations a reduction in energy consumption by as much as 50 per cent compared to accommodating IT systems within a traditional data centre facility. Featuring complete physical infrastructure including power and cooling systems and remote monitoring, the PMDC has all the elements of secure operating environments found in traditional ?raised-floor? data centres, including protection from fire, smoke, humidity, condensation and temperature changes. All IT equipment contained within the PMDC can be easily serviced and maintained from within a closed, physically secure and environmentally tight container.

?With businesses expanding rapidly in India, IBM?s PMDC?s are well equipped to offer an immediate, secure and portable solution that uses a plug and play design providing an environmentally isolated and physically protected, fully functional data center. It is tailored for unique applications such as expansion of local data centers, solutions for temporary data processing, mobility of data centers and remote applications, disaster recovery management, co-location as well as turn-key private cloud installations? said Akash Saxena, vice president, offerings management and development, global technology services, IBM India/South Asia.

Other PMDC features include:

  • Customisable to meet specific organisational requirements.
  • Provides a scalable platform. Should additional capacity be required in the future, organisations can easily expand the PMDC solution by extending to multiple containers.
  • Highly flexible and can be re-provisioned as a disaster recovery facility or as part of an active-active solution (i.e. where two sites are always active and one can back up the other site if it experiences an outage).

PMDC?s as modular data centres are smaller versions of IBM’s renowned larger traditional data centers that provide storage and site facilities to many of the world’s biggest companies. PMDC is a pressing business need that has to be addressed in today?s business landscape with the exponential rates in power consumption and energy costs. IBM’s PMDC?s will help companies in India design and deploy energy efficient modular data centers while taking the operational and capital expenditures into consideration.

PMDCs are also suitable for other pop-style organisations such as the film industry, financial services and emergency services that require instant support for space, an additional data centre or disaster recovery capability quickly and at a significantly lower cost than building a new data centre.
