Huawei Technologies has bagged a $50 million expansion contract from Uganda Telecom to expand the latter’s GSM network. The contract comprises the first phase of the $85 million expansion plan announced by Uganda Telecom earlier. The rollout agreement, which includes expansion of the existing state-of-the-art intelligent network and mobile switching centre switches, is scheduled to be concluded by the end of November 2007. Huawei will provide and install an additional 200 BTSs to add to the present 220 BTSs owned by Uganda Telecom. Uganda’s second phase of expansion will include the installation of a further 100 BTSs.
