According to Infonetics Research, Huawei led the global broadband aggregation equipment space with 33 per cent market share in the first quarter of 2013.

However, the vendor registered a decline of five per cent and four per cent in its EPON revenues and GPON revenues, respectively. Alcatel-Lucent and ZTE are ranked second and third in this space.

As per the research firm, overall spending on DSL, PON, and FTTH equipment declined by 7 per cent in the first quarter of 2013, compared to the fourth quarter of 2012. In the first quarter of 2013, the global DSL, PON, and FTTH equipment markets were valued at $1.5 billion.

The research firm adds that spending on direct subscriber line, PON and fibre-to-the-home equipment in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region declined by 27 per cent. In the first quarter of 2013, revenue from PON equipment in the EMEA region declined by 50 per cent. Further, there was a significant decline in spending on EPON equipment in China. China Telecom and China Unicom focused on GPON-based FTTH deployments to provide broadband access to 20 million subscribers.
