Huawei has launched PowerStar, a new solution that aims to reduce the energy consumption of multimode, multiband mobile communication networks. According to Huawei, PowerStar can reduce the electricity consumption of typical 2G, 3G and 4G base stations by 10-15 per cent per year, allowing carriers to reduce the network opex.

Huawei’s PowerStar solution adopts artificial intelligence (AI)-based innovative technologies, which is one of the three features of SingleRAN Pro, and other innovations to enable deep, coordinated power savings on 2G, 3G and 4G networks. This solution allows networks to align custom power saving strategies with configuration and traffic needs on different bands and modes at the base station level. With these strategies, mobile users can be switched to lower bands when the total traffic remains low so that the high bands can be switched off to save power.

By leveraging AI to analyse historical traffic and key performance indicator (KPI) data, PowerStar implements dynamic parameter adjustment so that power savings can be achieved without sacrificing network performance. It highlights the effects of energy savings on base stations and mobile networks, ensuring that carriers have dynamic energy use statistics for accurate power consumption management. In addition, PowerStar is software based and can be rapidly rolled out on the existing networks.
