Huawei has launched a report titled ?Superfast India – Repeating the Leapfrog – now to Next Generation Networks?. The report outlines the possibilities and benefits of next generation networks (NGN) and its impact on overall national competitiveness. It also determines the various factors in implementing 4G networks from the viewpoint of three main stakeholder groups including government, service providers and consumers.

The report has been commissioned in association with Booz & Company and Confederation of Indian Industry.

According to the report, the telecom sector in India has the ability to become a major enabler for other sectors ? services, industrial and social. Even though it witnessed a boom in the early 2000, the telecom sector?s growth in the country seems to have become stagnant in the last few years due to impending regulatory and environmental issues. This has kept India afar from realising the national goal of universal broadband connectivity, both in terms of the number of connections (quantitative) and availability of 100 Mbps on demand (qualitative).

The report added that as the present mainstream 3G technology will not be able to significantly contribute to bridging the digital gap in India, it is imperative for India to jump to the next generation of telecom technology for universal connectivity.  Further, the Digital India initiative of the government would impart significantly greater urgency for India to leapfrog and catch up with the world on the connectivity front by transitioning to NGN.

The report also calls upon the government to fund and initiate a pan-India institutional programme to develop integrated right-of-way infrastructure to support NGN as well as other social services. This will lead to deliver better outcomes for citizen health, utilities, industrial competitiveness, knowledge economy and environment.

Commenting on the launch, Cai Liqun, chief executive officer, Huawei India, ?Huawei strongly believes that providing the next generation of connectivity to the citizens is the need of the hour. Through the launch of this report we aim to analyse the impact of a successful telecom strategy on overall national competitiveness. The report also evaluates the possibilities and benefits of NGN and dwells upon building fourth generation mobile network technology for building a better connected India?.

Rita Teaotia, special secretary, Department of Telecommunications (DoT), said, ?The Indian telecom sector has come a long way in voice and data telephony and will continue to stride further. However, the uptake of 4G and adoption of broadband are some of the critical elements adding to this growth.?
