The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) plans to frame guidelines based on which operators would be allowed to continue using spectrum after their licence period expired. Currently, there are no clear guidelines governing the renewal of licences.

On its website, DoT stated, “The licence for unified access services is issued on non-exclusive basis, for a period of 20 years, extendable by 10 years at one time within the territorial jurisdiction of a licensed service area.”

There is, however, no mention of the criteria based on which the licences could be renewed.
