
According to the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the GSM subscriber base in the country stood at 705.20 million in March 2015. The GSM operators added about 8.19 million new subscribers in March 2015 witnessing a growth of 1.17 per cent over the last month. The GSM subscriber base stood at 697 million at the end of February 2015.
COAI which represents telecom players like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India, Idea Cellular and Aircel has stated that the data does not include GSM subscriber numbers of Reliance Communications, Tata Teleservices Limited and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited.
As per the data, among the service providers, Bharti Airtel added 2.90 million subscribers in the month of March 2015, taking its overall GSM subscriber base to 226.02 million at the end of March 2015. Idea Cellular and Vodafone India added 2.35 million subscribers and 1.36 million subscribers and their subscriber base stood at 157.81 million and 183.80 million at the end of March 2015.
Other operators including Aircel added 864,000 subscribers and its subscriber base increased to 81.3 million, while Uninor added 463,000 users to take its base to 45.6 million at the end of the reported period. Meanwhile, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited and Videocon added 19,353 and 230,000 new subscribers in the month of March 2015, taking their total subscriber base to 3.42 million and 7.13 million respectively.
