As part of the ?Digital India? initiative, the government will provide Wi-Fi connectivity at key tourist and religious locations in Uttar Pradesh. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will be undertaking this project and it is collaborating with the administration for the same. Further, the Ministry of Communications and IT will also oversee this project to ensure completion of the project within the stipulated time.

As a part of the first phase of the project, BSNL will install Wi-Fi routers at both the Ghats and the Sangam in Varanasi. In the second phase of the project, Wi-Fi connectivity will be brought to other vital tourist spots in the state to provide for internet services.

BSNL also already commenced work on rolling out optic fibre cables in these areas. The operator is also working on the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) project, which aims to provide broadband connectivity to 250,000 gram panchayats across the country.
