According to S Krishnan, secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the government will reportedly fund up to 50 per cent of AI compute infrastructure that will be created in partnership with the private sector.

While speaking at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Annual Business Summit, he noted that the government is looking to set up at least 10,000 graphics processing units (GPU) based compute capacity in the country soon.

In addition, MeitY has set a target to make available GPU-based servers approved under the India Al Mission by March 2026. The rapid development of Al across the globe has led to an increase in demand for GPU-based servers as they can process data at a higher speed compared to central processing unit (CPU)-based servers.

He added that there is an independent capacity for the government’s own use, which is being attempted through the national supercomputing mission and the GPU capacity under India Al mission will be set up separately.
