The government is planning to notify mobile phone safety standards under the Bureau of Industrial Standards (BIS) Act to ensure compliance, with the safe radiation norms, by domestic and foreign handset makers.
At present, radiations emanating from the mobile handsets are measured in specific absorption rate (SAR) value, which denotes the quantum of radiations absorbed by the body when using a handset. DoT has mandated handset manufacturers to ensure the SAR value of their mobiles is less than or equal to 1.6 watts per kg.
DoT intends to emulate the method followed by the Department of Electronics & IT (DeiTY), which had earlier notified 15 electronic products, including laptops, tablets, plasma/LCD/LED TV, under the BIS Act to ensure that they were registered and met Indian safety standards.
