The government has launched the National Internet Registry (NIR).

The NIR will enable the Indian internet service providers (ISPs) to buy internet protocol (IP) addresses from the registry in India, instead of buying it from international agencies.

Currently, ISPs have to approach Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre (a regional internet registry based in Australia) for obtaining an IP address. This exercise proved to be time consuming and costly. The local NIR is expected to bring down the cost of obtaining an IP address by ISPs by about 70 per cent, since they will be paying for the IP address in Indian rupees instead of dollars.

Further, NIR will also facilitate faster access to information for cyber crime investigators and different government authorities.
