According to industry sources, the Department of Consumer Affairs has formed a committee to set a timeline for the adoption of USB Type-C as the standard charging port for electronic products, including smartphones, tablets and laptops.

The committee will reportedly be headed by Nidhi Khare, additional secretary at the Department of Consumer Affairs, and will have a bunch of IIT professors as members. As per sources, the committee is expected to hold its first meeting in the coming week to formulate an action plan for the adoption of USB Type-C as the universal charger.

In November 2022, mobile device makers and associations representing technology companies in India agreed to adopt USB Type-C as the standard charging port. While more than 98 per cent of android smartphones use USB Type-C as the charging port, Apple’s iPhones rely on its proprietary lightning port.
