The Government has extended the deadline for telecom equipment makers to get their imported products tested from October 2013 to July 2014. The decision was necessitated with the government?s failure to establish a Telecom Testing and Security Certification Centre.

Earlier, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), under the Safe to Connect project asked telecom manufacturers to get the imported telecom equipment tested by government agencies. The move was aimed at addressing security concerns raised by the government regarding the deployment of imported telecom equipment in the country?s communication networks.

The government had plans of setting up an academic institution such as the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to set up the lab for testing imported telecom equipment. While a pilot project was started by IISc, the project could not be completed.  Subsequently, the DoT appointed Wipro and Tech Mahindra to set up the lab. Both the companies are expected to complete the project in another nine months.
