The government has disconnected over 6.4 million fraudulent phone connections, detected with the help artificial intelligence and facial recognition powered solution for telecom SIM subscriber verification (ASTR) in the last six months.
The Centre of Development of Telematics (C-DOT)-developed tool, ASTR, detects the usage of the photo of a single person for procuring SIM cards beyond the permitted number of times. It tries to find photos with similar facial vectors to zero in on fraudulent connections.
As per the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) regulations, a person is permitted to have only nine sim cards with an Aadhaar card. However, C-DOT’s ASTR has found some cases where an individual has obtained phone connections thousands of times.
