The government has outlined the responsibilities of its various departments concerning the security of telecom networks, cyber security, and cyber-crime.

As per the new directive, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) under the Ministry of Communication will now oversee matters related to telecom network security. Additionally, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) will provide support to other central ministries and departments regarding cyber security. The Department of Internal Security under the Ministry of Home Affairs will handle all issues related to cyber-crime.

Furthermore, the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), which operates under the prime minister’s office, will coordinate and provide strategic direction for cyber security efforts. The NSCS acts as the primary body for all internal and external security matters in the country. This amendment is referred to as the Government of India (allocation of business) (three hundred and seventy seventh amendment) rules, 2024, and it takes effect immediately.
