After the launch of Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) technology developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), in the new Apple iPhone 15 models, the government is planning to mandate smartphone manufacturers to embed the technology in all smartphones sold in India by 2025. All 5G phones would be required to support NavIC by January 1, 2025, while other phones by December 2025.
The government is also considering offering additional incentives to smartphone manufacturers in the next round of its production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme if they use chips that are designed or manufactured in India and that also support NavIC technology.
However, only a few smartphones currently support NavIC, including the smartphones from manufacturers Poco, Vivo and Xiaomi. Companies manufacturing laptops, computers and servers and using domestically made components under the IT hardware PLI scheme would also get additional benefits under the restructured scheme.
