After nearly two years of deliberations, the Parliamentary panel adopted the report on the data protection bill. The government aims at protecting the privacy of the individuals. The introduction of data protection bill will further strengthen the legal framework around privacy.

The bill, which seeks to provide for the protection of personal data of individuals and establish a data protection authority for the same, was brought to Parliament in 2019.

As per personal data protection (PDP) bill, the central government can exempt its agencies from the provisions of the act for protecting national interest and for protecting the security of the state, public order, sovereignty and integrity of India.

The concerns which were there on Aadhaar have been addressed with certain regulations as per Supreme Court judgement. The data protection bill will further strengthen that legal framework.
