The union government has released a notification stating that over the top (OTT) platforms will now come under the ambit of the ministry of information and broadcasting.

As such, all content on OTT platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, online films and digital news sites will now fall under the purview of the ministry of information and broadcasting.

This move will enable the government to exercise control over OTT platforms, which were unregulated till now.

Earlier in October 2019, the government had indicated that it will issue a list of don’ts for the video streaming services like Netflix and Hotstar. Further, it had directed these platforms to set up a self-regulatory body on the lines of the News Broadcasters Standard Authority.

Following this, eight video streaming service providers had signed a self-regulatory code that laid down a set of guiding principles for content on these platforms. However, this code was rejected by the government.
