The government has appointed Robert Jerard Ravi to assume additional responsibilities as the chairman and managing director (CMD) of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).
Jerard is currently serving as deputy director general at DoT and is also serving as the CMD of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) and CMD of Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL). His role in BSNL will be crucial as the company is going through transition into 4G and 5G in future. Also, MTNL that was supposed to get merged into BSNL is now being looked onto. This additional charge as BSNL’s CMD will be effective from July 15, 2024 until January 14, 2025, or until further orders are issued.
P K Purwar, the current CMD of BSNL had taken charge in July 2019 for five years. He had recently applied for an extension. However, the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) has decided not to extend his tenure beyond July 14, 2024.
