The government has appointed Parameswaran Iyer as the new chief executive officer (CEO) of NITI Aayog. The appointment comes in the backdrop of the retirement of incumbent CEO Amitabh Kant on June 30, 2022.
Iyer is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre and has led the Swachh Bharat Mission of the government between 2016 and 2020. He entered the Indian Administrative Service in 1981 and took a voluntary retirement in 2009 to join the water and sanitation initiatives at the World Bank. In 2016, Iyer returned to India and was appointed by the government to head the drinking and sanitation department and lead the Swachh Bharat Mission.
His prior stint includes working in Vietnam, China, Egypt, Lebanon and Washington for the World Bank. In 2020, Iyer resigned from the position and returned to the United States to join the World Bank again.
Meanwhile Kant was appointed as the CEO of the NITI Aayog on February 17, 2016, for a fixed two-year term. He was later given an extension till June 30, 2019. His term was further extended for two years till June 2021 and then another one-year extension was given till June 30 2022.
