As per industry sources, Google has said that it will discontinue its Station Wi-Fi program in India in 2020 and is currently working with its partners like RailTel to help with the transition of existing sites.
As per Google, mobile data plans have become increasingly affordable in India. Further, the challenge of varying technical requirements and infrastructure among its partners across countries has also made it difficult for Station to scale and be sustainable, especially for its partners. Therefore, Google had decided to wind down the Station program globally, through 2020.
Google had launched the Station Wi-Fi program in India in 2015 in partnership with Indian Railways and Railtel. Under the program, Google had set up free public Wi-Fi at over 400 railway stations in India by June 2018. Further, it had implemented the Station Wi-Fi project in thousands of other locations around the country in partnership with telecommunications companies, ISPs and local authorities.
