As part of compliance with India’s IT rules that came into effect in May 2021, Google India revealed that it received 29,842 complaints in September 2021 from individual users located in India via designated mechanisms, and the number of removal actions as a result of user complaints stood at 76,967 in September 2021. The report further said that the complaints relate to third-party content that is believed to violate local laws or personal rights on Google’s significant social media intermediaries (SSMI) platforms.

In addition to reports from users, Google also removed 450,246 pieces of content in September 2021 as a result of automated detection. Previously, Google had received 35,191 complaints from users and removed 93,550 pieces of content in August, while 651,933 pieces of content were removed as a result of automated detection.

Further, the compliance report further stated that some requests alleged infringement of intellectual property rights, while others claimed violation of local laws prohibiting types of content on grounds such as defamation.
