Globalstar, Apple’s satellite communication partner, has reportedly approached the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) to obtain authorisation for launching its services in India. The company is also expected to apply soon for a Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite Services (GMPCS) licence with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
While Globalstar is believed to have already secured test spectrum from the DoT to showcase disaster management applications, it is yet to apply for a commercial licence such as GMPCS or VSAT. The spectrum allotted for testing is provided by the DoT on a non-interference and non-protection basis, strictly for non-commercial use and under self-declaration norms.
Currently, Globalstar offers direct-to-cell connectivity for iPhone users and satcom services for various industries. The company had previously indicated its plans to enter the Indian market. In its submission to TRAI in August 2024, it revealed intentions to establish a wholly owned Indian subsidiary and set up a land earth station gateway in the country.
