GlobalFoundries, a major US-based semiconductor manufacturing company, is reportedly set to begin operations in Kolkata with its research and development (R&D) and testing facilities by the end of August or early September 2025.
Confirming the development, the company said that the launch of its operations in Kolkata will enhance the investment landscape in Bengal’s IT and semiconductor sectors and help curb brain drain by tapping into the state’s pool of talented professionals.
In the second phase of its expansion, GlobalFoundries plans to set up a Fabrication Laboratory, which is expected to generate employment at a significantly larger scale. Moreover, the company has been allocated approximately 13,000 square feet of space at the Software Technology Park of India (STPI) IT park located on the eastern fringes of Kolkata’s Salt Lake area.
