According to a report by Counterpoint Research, global shipments of extended reality (XR) headsets dropped 19 per cent year-over-year (Y-o-Y) in 2023 due to the absence of compelling new devices, as well as a lack of engaging use cases beyond gaming.

As per data, Meta captured 59 per cent global XR headset shipments in 2023, down from 77 per cent in 2022, due to strengthened competition from Sony’s latest PSVR2. Meta’s shipment volume also declined by 38 per cent Y-o-Y in 2023. But despite this, Meta continued to dominate the XR market in 2023.

Sony performed well in 2023 and secured the second position in the XR market helped by the successful launch of the PSVR2.

The report also mentioned that developers are still figuring out what works best in this medium.

Limitations of present technology are presenting challenges such as motion sickness, bulky form factors, and noticeable lag, preventing the adoption of XR headsets by serious gamers.

However, high entry barriers related to content production costs, as well as a skill gap, limited even an initial take-off of streaming as a serious use case.
