According to an update in Ericsson’s biannual mobility report, about 70 million new 5G subscriptions have been added globally during the second quarter (Q2) of the calendar year (CY) 2022. With the recent additions, the total number of 5G subscriptions globally has reached 690 million.

Meanwhile, the other updates in the report include:

  • 3 billion mobile subscriptions at the close of Q2 CY’2022
  • About 6.1 billion unique mobile subscribers at the close of Q2 CY’2022
  • Mobile broadband accounts for about 86 per cent of all mobile subscriptions
  • 218 communications service providers launched commercial 5G services
  • 24 communications service providers launched 5G standalone (SA) networks
  • Mobile network data traffic grew 39 per cent between Q2 CY’2021 and Q2 CY’2022
  • Total monthly global mobile network data traffic reached 100 exabytes (EB).

However, in the long term, Ericsson projects the traffic to grow on the account of the rising number of smartphone subscriptions and an increasing average data volume per subscription, fuelled primarily by increased viewing of video content.
