Chinese handset manufacturer, Gionee is planning to acquire three-four per cent share in the Indian mobile handset market. Currently, the Indian handset market is estimated at Rs 1,000 billion.

Gionee?s portfolio for the Indian market comprise 17 handset models; of which five are feature (basic) phones, while the remaining are smartphones. The prices of these handsets range between Rs 1,750 and Rs 30,000.

In 2013, Gionee sold 1 million handset units in the Indian market and plans to take this number to 5 million in the current fiscal. Further, to enhance its retail footprint, the company is planning to open 250 branded stores and 2,500 shop-in-shops this year. It is also planning to increase the number of service centres from 500 to 750. It will also soon launch phones which support several Indian languages, including Gujarati, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Punjabi.

Globally, Gionee is amongst the top 12 smartphone brand by market share. It sells over 23 million devices annually has a production capacity of 40 million units a year.
