Four global telecom majors, NEC Corporation, Tyco, Alcatel-Lucent and Fujitsu, are in the race to bag RCL’s $1.5 billion submarine cable contract, to be awarded by end-January 2007. On-ground implementation would begin by March 2007. Reliance had initially received 12 applications and finalised four vendors. The shortlisted company will have to source equipment and infrastructure for the project, which entails laying over 50,000 km of optic fibre cable connecting over 60 countries.
