According to Point Topic, fibre is driving the global demand for broadband access.

Of the 54 million new broadband subscribers in the third quarter of 2012, about 26 million subscribers are being served through fibre-based broadband. Overall, fiber deployments have now surpassed cable-based broadband connections. Currently, fibre deployments account for 19.7 per cent of the total broadband market.

Further, fiber to the x (FTTx) serves more than 105 million global broadband subscribers worldwide. In the next few months, fiber deployments (including FTTx and fiber to the home) are expected to serve over 125 million broadband users.
