The Essar Group will extend the ?Yu’ brand, now used for 2G mobile services in Kenya, to all its overseas voice telephony ventures. It is reportedly interested in making further inroads into Africa by pursuing 2G licences in Tanzania, Zambia, Cameroon, and other countries.

According to Rajiv Sawhney, chief executive officer, Essar’s telecom business group, the Yu brand was created to be culturally and linguistically agnostic. The company?s plan is to have the brand in whichever geography they are present in.

He added that ?Yu’? will shortly debut in Uganda and the Congo.
