Ericsson has launched the Gramjyoti Rural Broadband Project in 18 villages and 15 towns of Tamil Nadu. The pilot project is meant to demonstrate applications like telemedicine and egovernance on a high speed packet access-powered broadband network. The network has been deployed on the existing 2G networks of GSM operators like Bharti Airtel, BSNL and Aircel.

Ericsson has used 2.1 GHz spectrum (a 3G band) allocated to it by the government on a trial basis. The broadband network, which is equipped to provide 3G services, will be later expanded to other parts of the country. L
