Egypt’s Orascom Telecom is looking at the possibility of merging its Bangladeshi mobile unit Banglalink with GSM operator AKTEL.

Banglalink is currently in the second position in Bangladesh’s cellular market, ahead of AKTEL, which is controlled by Malaysia-based Axiata. A merger will create a much closer rival to market leader GrameenPhone, which has a mobile market share of 47 per cent as of March 2009.
