The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) may shortly have its first top official from the private sector.

Dr Rakesh Kumar Mehrotra, earlier part of the regulatory team at Tata Teleservices Limited, is set to be appointed as the member of the TRAI.

The minister for communications and IT has approved the appointment and the DoT is currently undergoing the process of obtaining security clearance before formally announcing the appointment.

Dr Mehrotra is currently the chief executive officer of an independent consultancy firm, Trayambakam Telecom Consultants. The other candidates for this post included R.K. Arnold, currently secretary, TRAI, and Satya Pal, chief general manager, Gujarat, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited.

Until now, senior bureaucrats or officers belonging to the Indian Telecom Services were appointed for positions at TRAI.
