The government is likely to launch a pilot project to test a new technology which helps in locating lost or cloned mobile phones on real time basis, says news reports.

The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) plans to use Central Device Information Registry (CDIR), the technology developed by Telecordia to locate mobile phones in real time. R Chandrashekhar, secretary, DoT has asked officials to work on the proposal made by MNP Interconnection Telecom Solution (MITS) for exploring the technology which claims to locate mobile phones in real time. Telecordia is a stakeholder in MITS.

CDIR consolidates real-time and non-real time to address traditional mobile device challenges such as mobile theft, invalid device blocking, counterfeiting and cloning detection. Chandrashekhar is of the view that CDIR technology trials can be undertaken at no extra cost to the government to assess the utility of the proposed technology.

Prior to undertaking trials, DoT is working to ensure that there is no misuse of data and information collected by MITS during the trials.
