The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is expected to take a decision on the issue of spectrum pricing shortly. This is expected to be before the National Telecom Policy, 2011 is announced in December 2011.

According to R. Chandrashekhar, secretary, DoT, “The issue of spectrum pricing is being dealt with separately. Once we receive the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India?s (TRAI) response on this subject, we shall file it before the Telecom Commission for a final decision.?

Prior to this, TRAI had made recommendations on any extra spectrum held by operators and DoT had sought clarification on several points from the regulator.

For instance, DoT had sought clarification on whether operators should be charged retrospectively or from the current date for the additional spectrum.

DoT had also sought clarification on the rationale for defining the prescribed limit for spectrum allocation.
