The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) plans to offer Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) BWA spectrum in a new frequency band, in lieu of reimbursing over Rs 83.13 billion to the incumbent.

DoT has said that it has one slot of BWA spectrum available in most telecom circles.

Prior to this, BSNL had offered to surrender its BWA spectrum in 17 circles. The operator has also asked DoT for a refund of Rs 83.13 billion.

It is believed that the operator had written to DoT in this regard and had asked if it could retain spectrum in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Haryana.

The letter allegedly also stated that BSNL was allotted a non-standardised band of BWA spectrum that could not be used. So, BSNL asked DoT to explore the option of re-auctioning the spectrum.

BSNL had floated a tender to allow franchisees to run services on a revenue share basis. This tender came under DoT?s scanner, due to alleged irregularities in allotting BSNL’s Wi-Max franchisee.
